What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program designed to help eligible Canadian residents pay for oral-health care.
Coverage depends on adjusted family net income, active coverage dates, clinical need, frequency limits and preauthorization requirements.
- Federal dental benefit
- Based partly on adjusted family net income
- For eligible residents without access to private dental insurance
- Subject to program rules and limits
- Administered through Sun Life for claims and provider payments
- Not private dental insurance
- Not automatic free dental care
- Not coverage for cosmetic or implant treatment
Final eligibility and coverage decisions are made under Government of Canada CDCP rules.
Clear cost guidance before treatment begins
Dentistry on Britannia does not charge an additional clinic fee above the applicable CDCP-established fee for an eligible covered service.
- Your government-required CDCP co-payment may still apply
- Non-covered services remain payable by the patient
- Services outside frequency limits may not be covered
- Treatment requiring but not receiving preauthorization may not be covered
- Treatment before the active coverage date is not covered
This policy does not mean every patient will have a $0 balance.

Applicants must meet all four federal requirements. Official eligibility is determined by the Government of Canada.
No Access to Private Dental Insurance
You generally cannot have access through:
- Your employer or pension
- A spouse or family member’s employer or pension
- A professional or student organization
- A privately purchased plan
- A health spending account covering dental care
You may still be considered to have access even if you declined enrolment, never used the plan or must pay a premium.
Required Canadian Tax Returns Filed
You and your spouse or common-law partner, where applicable, must have filed the required Canadian tax return for the previous year.
Adjusted Family Net Income Below $90,000
Eligibility and co-payment levels are based on adjusted family net income, not only the income of the person receiving treatment.
Canadian Resident for Tax Purposes
You and your spouse or common-law partner, where applicable, must meet the Canadian residency requirement for tax purposes.
Is there a current age requirement?
The current page should use the four federal eligibility requirements and should not reuse outdated age-based application schedules from earlier years.
How Much Does the CDCP Cover?
CDCP reimbursement is based on eligible services at CDCP-established fees.
0% Patient Co-Payment
The CDCP may pay 100% of its established fee for an eligible covered service.
40% Patient Co-Payment
The CDCP pays 60% of its established fee. The patient is responsible for the government-required 40% co-payment.
